The country of Wales can be divided into 5 regions:

1. North West

The North West region of Wales is home to the glorious Snowdonia National Park, which features the highest mountain in England and Wales. There are also a large handful of castles and elegant gardens; some of which are highly famous.

The North West region of Wales can easily be reached in your car rental from Cardiff, if you haven't chosen to fly in from Liverpool or Manchester.

2. North East

The North East region is the most populous in Wales, with much of this condensed into Wrexham and Deeside. It is also home to the renowned Glyndwr University and is therefore largely populated by students.

The North East city of Llangollen becomes a hive of activity in July when the International Eisteddfod comes to town. Bringing together singing and dancing talents from across the world, this is a cultural event you do not want to miss.

3. Mid Wales

Mid Wales is the perfect destination to escape to if you are after a break from the fast paced city life. Cities here are replaced with small spa towns that are home to beautiful waterfalls, rolling hills, glorious lakes and endless fields of sheep.

One of the most notable waterfalls here is the stunning Pistyll Rhaeadr, which is actually higher than Niagara Falls. It can be found within the Berwyn Mountains, which lie just within the border of Wales.

4. South West

When it comes to scenery in Wales, the south west region has got it covered. The most popular destination would have to be the Gower Peninsula Area of the Outstanding Natural Beauty near Swansea. This unspoiled area boasts a wealth of natural beauty and rich history and is an ideal place to spend a few days.

The Pembrokeshire Coast is another great place to explore while in the region, boasting a dramatic coastline, unique wildlife and incredible scenery.

5. South East

The south east region of Wales is the most developed in the country and as such, only takes two to three hours to drive to from London. The capital city of Cardiff is located within just an hour's drive of Brecon Beacons National Park, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the Wye Valley. All of these places are great for day trips in your rental car.
